Lake Mattamuskeet is the largest natural lake in North Carolina, spanning approximately 40,000 acres in remote Hyde County on the state's coastal plain. This remarkably shallow lake — averaging just 2 to 3 feet deep with a maximum depth of only 5 feet — is a vast freshwater marsh ecosystem that serves as the centerpiece of the Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge, one of the most important waterfowl wintering areas on the Atlantic Flyway.

Fishing on Lake Mattamuskeet is a unique experience defined by the lake's extreme shallowness and aquatic vegetation. Largemouth bass are the primary game fish, found around patches of submerged vegetation, lily pads, and the occasional deeper canal channels. Crappie, catfish, and various sunfish species are also available. Anglers typically use flat-bottom boats, jon boats, or kayaks to navigate the shallow water. The fishing can be outstanding when conditions align, particularly during spring and fall.

The historic Mattamuskeet Lodge, a converted pumping station built in 1928, stands as a landmark on the lake's north shore. Access is primarily through wildlife refuge canals and designated entry points. The lake is internationally renowned for its winter concentrations of tundra swans, snow geese, and ducks, making it a dual-purpose destination for anglers and birdwatchers.
