About Kerr Lake (Buggs Island)
Kerr Lake, also known as Buggs Island Lake, is a massive 50,000-acre U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Roanoke River along the North Carolina-Virginia border. With 800 miles of shoreline โ more than any other lake in North Carolina โ Kerr Lake is one of the largest and most popular recreation lakes in the Southeast, drawing over 3 million visitors annually for fishing, boating, camping, and swimming.
The lake is a premier fishing destination with outstanding opportunities for largemouth bass, striped bass, hybrid striped bass, crappie, and catfish. The expansive main lake and numerous creek arms provide diverse habitats, from deep clear-water channels to shallow stained-water coves with abundant cover. Bass tournaments are held year-round, and the striped bass fishery produces trophy fish exceeding 30 pounds. Crappie fishing is exceptional, particularly in winter and early spring around submerged brush and standing timber.
Kerr Lake State Recreation Area on the North Carolina side and several Virginia state parks provide extensive public facilities including boat ramps, campgrounds, swim beaches, and picnic areas. The lake's remote location between Henderson, NC and Clarksville, VA ensures a relatively uncrowded experience despite its popularity. Kerr Lake feeds downstream Lake Gaston, creating a chain of excellent fishing reservoirs along the Roanoke River.
