About Falls Lake
Falls Lake is a 12,410-acre reservoir on the Neuse River just north of Raleigh, serving as the primary drinking water supply and top recreation destination for the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. With 200 miles of shoreline winding through forested hills, Falls Lake provides outstanding fishing for largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, and catfish, along with excellent boating and kayaking opportunities.
The lake's largemouth bass fishery is considered one of the best in the North Carolina Piedmont, with fish frequently reaching 5 to 8 pounds around submerged timber, rocky points, and aquatic vegetation. Striped bass anglers target the deeper main-lake areas, especially during summer when fish school near thermoclines. The crappie fishing is exceptional in spring around standing timber, and yellow perch provide a unique fishery not found in many other Triangle-area lakes.
Falls Lake State Recreation Area manages several public access points with boat ramps, campgrounds, swim beaches, and picnic areas. The Falls Lake Trail, a 30-mile hiking and mountain biking path, follows much of the north shore. The lake's proximity to downtown Raleigh โ just 20 minutes away โ makes it one of the most visited Corps of Engineers lakes in North Carolina.
