About Lake Norman

Lake Norman is the largest man-made lake in North Carolina, spanning 32,510 acres with an impressive 520 miles of shoreline across four counties north of Charlotte. Often called the "Inland Sea," this Duke Energy reservoir on the Catawba River is the premier boating and fishing destination in the Charlotte metropolitan area, attracting millions of visitors each year for water sports, fishing tournaments, and lakeside recreation.

The lake supports a world-class striped bass fishery, with fish commonly exceeding 20 pounds and trophy catches over 40 pounds documented. Largemouth bass and spotted bass thrive in the lake's extensive cove systems, rocky shorelines, and submerged structure. The deeper main channel areas produce excellent catfish and white bass action, while crappie fishing peaks in spring around brush piles and dock structures throughout the upper reaches of the lake.

Lake Norman is surrounded by thriving lakefront communities, marinas, restaurants, and resort amenities. Multiple public boat ramps provide access at various points around the lake. The NASCAR hub of Mooresville sits on the north shore, and the lake is just 30 minutes from Uptown Charlotte. Lake Norman State Park on the north shore offers hiking, swimming, and additional boat access for visitors.
