About Core Sound

Core Sound is a shallow, pristine body of saltwater located between the mainland of Carteret County and the Core Banks barrier islands of Cape Lookout National Seashore. This remote and largely undeveloped sound is one of the most productive and least pressured inshore fishing destinations on the North Carolina coast, offering outstanding opportunities for red drum, speckled trout, and flounder in a wild, natural setting that has changed little over the centuries.

The sound's shallow grass flats — averaging just 3 to 4 feet deep — are ideal for sight-fishing red drum and wading for speckled trout. Flounder lie along the sandy channel edges and near the inlets that connect the sound to the Atlantic. Grey trout (weakfish), spot, and croaker provide additional action, particularly during summer and fall. The sound's connection to Cape Lookout and its surrounding shoals creates nutrient-rich waters that support an incredible abundance of baitfish and gamefish.

Core Sound is steeped in the maritime heritage of the Down East fishing communities of Harkers Island, Atlantic, and Marshallberg, where generations of commercial fishermen have worked these waters. The Core Sound Waterfowl Museum on Harkers Island celebrates this heritage. Access is available from several small public boat ramps in the Down East communities, and ferry service from Harkers Island connects to Cape Lookout National Seashore. The sound's remote character and exceptional fishing make it a favorite among experienced Carolina anglers seeking unspoiled coastal waters.
