About Cape Fear River

The Cape Fear River is the only major river system in North Carolina that flows directly into the Atlantic Ocean, stretching over 200 miles from the Piedmont near Fayetteville to the coast at Southport. This diverse waterway transitions from freshwater upriver habitat to a brackish tidal estuary near Wilmington and finally to saltwater near its mouth, creating an extraordinarily varied fishery that supports both freshwater and saltwater species along its length.

In the lower tidal reaches near Wilmington, red drum, flounder, and striped bass are the primary targets, with anglers working the dock pilings, oyster beds, and creek mouths along the river's winding course. The spring American shad run draws dedicated fly and light-tackle anglers to the river between Fayetteville and Lillington. Upriver sections provide good largemouth bass and catfish fishing in a scenic blackwater environment. The river's brackish zone — where fresh and salt water mix — is one of the most productive fishing areas, supporting a wide range of species year-round.

The Cape Fear River is central to the Wilmington area's identity and outdoor recreation culture. Public boat ramps are available at numerous points from Fayetteville to Southport. The river passes through downtown Wilmington's historic waterfront district and flows past the USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial. The lower river and its associated marshes, creeks, and islands near Bald Head Island and Southport offer outstanding inshore fishing in a beautiful coastal setting.
