Upper Red Lake is the largest natural lake located entirely within the state of Minnesota, encompassing over 107,000 acres in Beltrami and Clearwater counties. This vast, shallow lake — with a maximum depth of just 15 feet — is one of the most productive walleye fisheries in North America. The lake's warm, nutrient-rich waters grow walleye quickly, and the population is carefully managed to ensure sustainable harvests for generations of anglers.

Walleye fishing is the primary reason anglers visit Upper Red Lake, and the lake consistently delivers. Ice fishing is particularly popular, with the shallow water allowing walleye to be caught throughout the lake during winter. Northern pike, yellow perch, and crappie provide additional targets, though walleye are the overwhelming focus. The lake's open-water expanse can produce dangerous waves during strong winds, so boaters should exercise caution.

The small town of Waskish on the eastern shore serves as the main access point, with boat launches, bait shops, and basic services. Kelliher provides additional amenities to the south. Upper Red Lake connects to Lower Red Lake, though the two are managed as separate fisheries.
