About Lake Vermilion

Lake Vermilion is one of Minnesota's most scenic and productive fishing lakes, located in the heart of the Iron Range in St. Louis County. With over 39,000 acres of water and more than 365 islands, Vermilion offers an almost endless variety of structure and habitat for fish. The lake's 290 miles of shoreline — more than many lakes ten times its size — create countless bays, points, and channels that hold walleye, northern pike, musky, and smallmouth bass.

The clear waters of Lake Vermilion support excellent populations of walleye and musky, and the lake has produced numerous trophy-sized fish over the years. Smallmouth bass fishing is outstanding around the lake's rocky islands and shorelines, while crappie and bluegill provide fast action in sheltered bays. Ice fishing is extremely popular, with walleye and crappie being the primary winter targets.

The communities of Tower, Cook, and Soudan serve as base camps for anglers exploring Vermilion. The lake sits adjacent to Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park and is a short drive from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, making it a top destination for outdoor recreation in northern Minnesota.
