About Hoover Reservoir
Hoover Reservoir is a 3,272-acre impoundment on Big Walnut Creek in Delaware and Franklin counties, serving as a primary drinking water supply for the city of Columbus. Despite its municipal water supply designation, the reservoir supports an excellent multi-species fishery and is one of the most popular fishing destinations in the Columbus metro area. Horsepower restrictions help maintain water quality and create a peaceful fishing atmosphere.
Saugeye are the headliner species, stocked annually by the ODNR and growing quickly in the fertile water. The musky fishery has been gaining momentum, with quality fish caught along rocky shorelines and at the mouths of coves. Largemouth bass fishing is strong throughout the lake, with fish relating to docks, laydowns, and vegetation along the heavily wooded shoreline. Crappie concentrate in the upper reservoir arms during spring.
Several launch ramps are maintained by the City of Columbus and local park districts. The reservoir's narrow, winding shape means there is always a protected bank to fish regardless of wind direction. Westerville and Sunbury offer convenient services, and the reservoir's location makes it a go-to after-work fishing spot for central Ohio anglers.
