About Buckeye Lake
Buckeye Lake is a 3,100-acre shallow reservoir spanning Licking, Fairfield, and Perry counties, originally built in the early 1800s as a feeder lake for the Ohio and Erie Canal. It is the oldest artificial lake in Ohio and has a rich history as a recreational destination. Despite its shallow maximum depth of 18 feet, the lake supports a productive fishery thanks to abundant nutrients and extensive weed growth.
Saugeye are the primary predator species and are stocked regularly, providing good catches for trollers and jig anglers working the open basin. Crappie fishing around docks, weed edges, and submerged brush is excellent, with the spring spawn producing impressive catches of slabs. Largemouth bass thrive in the dense vegetation, and white bass provide fast action during their spring runs.
Buckeye Lake State Park manages several launch ramps, and private marinas and docks line much of the shoreline. The lake's proximity to Columbus, about 30 miles to the east, makes it a popular weekend destination. The village of Buckeye Lake and Millersport offer restaurants and bait shops catering to anglers.
