About Lake McConaughy

Lake McConaughy is Nebraska's largest reservoir and is affectionately known as Nebraska's ocean, stretching over 20 miles through the sand hills of western Nebraska. The lake offers outstanding walleye and white bass fishing, with trophy wipers regularly exceeding 15 pounds. Channel catfish thrive in the deeper channels, while smallmouth bass patrol the rocky points and submerged structure throughout the reservoir.

The lake features miles of white sand beaches and excellent boating access with multiple public boat ramps operated by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Kingsley Dam, which impounds the North Platte River to form the reservoir, creates a dramatic backdrop on the eastern end. The surrounding Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area provides camping, swimming, and year-round fishing opportunities that draw anglers from across the Great Plains.
