About Lewis and Clark Lake
Lewis and Clark Lake is a 31,000-acre reservoir on the Missouri River near Yankton, created by Gavins Point Dam at the downstream end of the Missouri River reservoir system. The lake is one of the most popular fishing destinations in the Dakotas, with excellent walleye fishing throughout the reservoir and outstanding paddlefish snagging in the tailwaters below the dam during spring. White bass provide fast action during their spawning runs, and channel catfish are abundant throughout the shallow, fertile waters.
Lewis and Clark Recreation Area on the South Dakota side provides well-maintained boat ramps, camping, and marina facilities. The reservoir's moderate size and relatively warm, shallow waters produce rapid fish growth and healthy populations of multiple species. Smallmouth bass have become an increasingly popular target along the rocky shorelines and gravel bars, and sauger inhabit the deeper main channel during cooler months. The Yankton area offers excellent amenities for visiting anglers, and the Lewis and Clark Visitor Center provides historical context for this stretch of the Missouri River.
