About Lake Ashtabula

Lake Ashtabula is a 5,200-acre reservoir on the Sheyenne River near Valley City in eastern North Dakota. The lake is one of the region's most consistent walleye producers, with fish in the 15- to 20-inch range readily caught along the old river channel and rocky points. White bass provide fast-paced action when schools are located, and northern pike patrol the weed beds and shallow bays throughout the reservoir.

The Baldhill Dam recreation area and additional public access sites provide boat ramps and shoreline fishing opportunities around Lake Ashtabula. The lake's location near Valley City and Interstate 94 makes it one of the most accessible fishing destinations in eastern North Dakota. Channel catfish and perch round out the multi-species fishery, and ice fishing is particularly popular during winter months when anglers target walleye and perch in the deeper holes along the submerged river channel.
