About Lake Macatawa

Lake Macatawa is an 1,800-acre drowned river mouth lake at the heart of Holland, Michigan, connecting to Lake Michigan through a well-maintained shipping channel at Holland State Park. The lake is the recreational centerstone of the Holland area, surrounded by a mix of residential development, parks, and marinas that make it one of the most accessible boating destinations on Michigan's west coast. The channel to Lake Michigan provides easy access to offshore salmon and trout fishing.

The lake supports a varied warm-water fishery with largemouth and smallmouth bass as the headliners. Rocky areas near the channel hold quality smallmouth, while the lake's abundant weed beds produce good largemouth action. Yellow perch, northern pike, and walleye round out the fishery. The Black River enters from the east, adding current and structure that attract fish. During salmon and steelhead seasons, the channel area becomes a hotspot as fish stage before entering the river system.

Holland State Park at the lake's outlet features one of Michigan's most popular beaches and provides a boat launch with access to both the lake and Lake Michigan. Additional public and private launch facilities and marinas are located around the lake. The city of Holland offers a full range of services, dining, and attractions including the famous Tulip Time Festival each spring. Lake Macatawa's central location and easy Great Lakes access make it a favorite of boaters throughout western Michigan.
