Lake Shelbyville is the premier outdoor recreation hub of central Illinois, covering 11,100 acres with an impressive 172 miles of shoreline across Shelby and Moultrie counties. Built on the Kaskaskia River by the Army Corps of Engineers, the lake's highly irregular shape creates countless coves, points, and creek arms that provide exceptional fish habitat and bank-fishing access.

The lake is one of the few waters in Illinois with a musky fishery, and trophy-class muskellunge are caught each year by anglers casting large swimbaits and jerkbaits along rocky shorelines. Crappie and largemouth bass are the bread-and-butter species, with spring brush-pile fishing producing big catches of slabs. Walleye and white bass add diversity, especially during their spring spawning runs up tributary creeks.

Eagle Creek State Park and Wolf Creek State Park flank the reservoir and offer well-maintained ramps, marinas, and campgrounds. The lake's central location makes it accessible from Champaign, Decatur, and Springfield, and it sees heavy recreational boating traffic on summer weekends.
