About Walter F. George Lake (Georgia Side)

Walter F. George Lake, also known as Lake Eufaula, is a 45,000-acre Army Corps reservoir on the Chattahoochee River straddling the Georgia-Alabama border. The Georgia side spans four counties — Quitman, Clay, Randolph, and Stewart — with 640 miles of combined shoreline and depths reaching 90 feet. The lake's fertile, vegetation-rich waters produce outstanding largemouth bass fishing that has earned it the nickname "Bass Capital of the World."

Hybrid striped bass are a major attraction, with fish regularly exceeding ten pounds in the lake's open water and around the dam area. Crappie fishing is excellent in the numerous creek arms and around submerged timber on the Georgia side, which tends to see less fishing pressure than the more developed Alabama shoreline. Catfish and bream round out a productive multi-species fishery.

Fort Gaines, perched on a bluff overlooking the lake, serves as the primary Georgia-side access point with a marina, boat ramps, and basic services. Georgetown provides additional access to the lake's northern reaches. The Georgia side of the lake offers a quieter, more rural fishing experience with less development and more natural shoreline than the Alabama side.
